Final Destination 3 [***–]

As far as campy horror flicks go, I’d say that Final Destination 3 is an example of when a franchise should take a step back and re-evaluate. Now I’d have given it 2 stars, but there was some gratuitous boobage, and the ways that the victims were killed was slightly amusing.

Back in 2000 when the original Final Destination hit screens, I loved it. The simple concept of death having a design, and if a person cheats death – eventually it catches up in a pretty inventive and bloody manner – was something I hadn’t seen before. The sequel also wasn’t bad, maybe it was the hope of seeing Ali Larter’s cans, or it was actually entertaining, the movie was campy – but good. It didn’t approach the level of insulting my intelligence. Then comes Final Destination 3. It’s bigger. It’s badder. It’s stupid.

The only redeeming qualities of this picture are the cringe factor and the bare breasts which are sadly turned into KFC. Starting out in the typical FD manner, a teenager has a bloody vision of a disaster that costs their peers lives with prejudice. It was very well done, but a big mistake IMHO is that the whole deja-vu / weird feeling effect was overdone and lame. I try to take every sequel on its own merit, which is why I’m not going too far into comparison with the prior films, but this was overdone. The girl could have taken the pictures, gotten on the coaster, saw the calamity, and then freaked. The intro was drawn out way too far.

Then the deaths… By far the most outstanding aspect of these movies are how the people get taken out. Most of the effort in these productions has been put into killing the kids, and it shows. Still, I can’t quite figure out why the guy in the box truck kept backing up to the fast-food joint – didn’t make sense. Also, the pickup truck in that scene could have EASILY rammed the car in front of it and pushed it out of the way… instead they kick out the windshield, get out of the way, and calamity ensues.

Still, when it comes to campy horror flicks, Final Destination still delivers – but the franchise is definitely showing its age. We know the formula for these films and simply dragging out the variables is not a solution. Bigger, faster, more death, more destruction is needed should they shit out yet another sequel. Anything less should just go straight to DVD.

Cleaning that LCD

Just a tip to those not in the know (like I was a mere 5 minutes ago)… I, like most people at this point have at least 1 LCD in their life that needs to be cleaned. In the past, I’ve used Windex. I’ve now found out that Ammonia (ingredient in most commercial glass cleaners) is BAD.

DO NOT USE COMMERCIAL GLASS CLEANERS!!!

Now most office supply stores, and some electronics stores will sell LCD cleaner that might cost anywhere from $10 to $20. Now if you’ve gone and bought a spiffy LCD television, YOU CANT AFFORD THAT ANYMORE. That said, grab some ordinary Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, distilled water, and a soft cloth. Now I’ve heard a few different proportions for the mixture, 50/50 to 70/30 for the mixture of alcohol to water. Since the rubbing alcohol you’d buy at the store is already diluted with water, a 70/30 might just work fine.

Do not use tap water – any minerals in the water (no filter gets out ALL minerals) will show up as white streaks on the screen.

Do not use any sort of paper towel or tissue – no matter how soft it is. You’ll scratch your screen.

Do not spray the solution directly on the screen! Spray it on the towel, and wipe the screen down with the towel. Follow up with another soft cloth to dry the screen – and you’re done. Do not wipe too hard, as it can also damage the screen.

Now I put this up mainly so I can search bag through my blog for the information, but as you fine folks may be tempted to give it a shot – do not take my word as gospel. For starters, I take no responsibility if you follow this guide to the letter and fuck up your LCD. Secondly, it isn’t hard to do a Google search and find similar information yourself. Lastly, if you don’t want to try it yourself – pick up the actual cleaning kit at your local electronics store.

Me? I’m cheap…erg…frugal. I’ll give it a shot, and proceed to kick myself in the ass if I screw something up. I long for those days where I can see just how flexible I truly am.

Regulate violence now? BULLSHIT.

FCC report: TV violence should be regulated

Government censorship is illegal and it is wrong. It is a complete violation of the 1st Amendment. The fact that things are selectively and repeatedly censored leads me to believe that the 1st Amendment no longer exists – or is simply no longer valid.

No where in the report are network news reports mentioned. The media continues to receive a blank check when it comes to what they report, when they report, and how they report it. They can show bodies, display the results of violent wrecks, bullets, attacks, riots, you name it – there is no censorship for the media. Why do they get protection while the average citizen, or the average actor, writer, director – must throttle their creativity in order to conform to some watered down, bullshit standard mandated by the FCC?

What can we do though, I can write letters to my elected officials calling for the FCC to be de-constructed, to put the power and choice of what we may consume and when we may consume it back in the hands of the American people… Nobody cares anymore. We’ve all adapted to these standards, accepted them, we thrive in this censored and restricted utopia.

Nobody minds not smoking indoors – anywhere. Nobody minds not talking on cellphones will driving. Nobody minds classic movies being destroyed by the selective removal of words like fuck, shit, gun, and God. Everyone has sex, from the most innocent amongst us to the old fogies under the influence of Viagra… we just can’t see it on television unless Tom Brokaw is standing in front of it or we are paying through the nose to see it on DVD or HBO. Nobody cares about gas prices over $2… Nobody cares about a pack of smokes costing $7 to kill the buyer while people are jailed for smoking a joint which never killed a soul. Nobody cares that a criminal can grab a gun on the cheap while an honest and hardworking taxpayer must go through reams of paperwork and waiting periods – to maybe get a gun. Nobody cares that political speech has been restricted in the name of reform.

Nobody cares.

We’ve been trained to accept our tyranny, one violation at a time. While Americans take to soap boxes and fight amongst each other in a Civil War where no shots have been fired, the very freedoms we were guaranteed by God have been usurped by man – not to objection, but to applause.

Sure, we can still do everything they have told us is wrong – but now we’ve lost the right to do it freely. Thank God we’ve got the media to protect us.

That’s right, it worked for the RIAA!

So the RIAA has for the past few years been destroying the lives of music fans for minor transgressions against the industry which apparently had no real effect on record sales. According to them – it is working.

It’s no suprise that another major player in the entertainment industry – YouTube – is trying the same thing. YouTube had a deadline to implement a technology which would remove, filter, or block the copywritten programs which are still very easy to find on their site. The deadline came and went, and no technology was implemented. Now they’re handing over information on users, well, one user so far, to Fox because he/she posted episodes of 24 before they were actually aired.

Now posting copywritten material to YouTube is a violation of their TOS as well as illegal, YouTube hasn’t been able to get a handle on it – although Google apparently does not have the same problem. Personally, I think the industry should sue YouTube, not for the names of users but to physically shut down YouTube until they can implement these blocks.

Sure they’re big, sure they’re owned by Google, but if the constant assault on Microsoft for various legal violations is any evidence – size does not and should not matter. Shut the site down, problem solved.

This isn’t a case of a distributed P2P network with nameless and faceless servers numbering tens of thousands across the fruited plain – this is one site, one corporate entity, which has made quite a bit of money off the backs of copyright holders without retribution. I think it’s about time they paid up.

HEARING ON ‘WARMING OF PLANET’ CANCELED BECAUSE OF SNOWSTORM

Blatantly stolen from the Drudge Report:

HOUSE HEARING ON ‘WARMING OF THE PLANET’ CANCELED AFTER SNOW/ICE STORM
HEARING NOTICE
Tue Feb 13 2007 19:31:25 ET

The Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality hearing scheduled for Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 Rayburn House Office Building has been postponed due to inclement weather. The hearing is entitled “Climate Change: Are Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Human Activities Contributing to a Warming of the Planet?”

The hearing will be rescheduled to a date and time to be announced later.

DC WEATHER REPORT:

Wednesday: Freezing rain in the morning…then a chance of snow in the afternoon. Ice accumulation of less than one quarter of an inch. Highs in the mid 30s. Northwest winds around 20 mph. Chance of precipitation 80 percent.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy. Lows around 18. Northwest winds around 20 mph.

Can we please drop this global warming crap already? There are more important things out there like the Iraq War and how we can win it. Wait, all the elected politicians don’t think we can win it… they don’t have any ideas on how to win it… and the big story is Global Warming during a snow storm.

Damn, Americans are idiots.

Well I guess they make ’em better than they used to…

So a week or two back I lost the Blue Tooth headset for my cellphone. Couldn’t find the thing anywhere. I pretty much chalked it up to another lost toy. Then my gf tells me she thinks she owes me a new headset. Apparently it made it through the washer and dryer in a pair of my Levi’s.

So I get it back, plug it in, charge it up, and I’ll be damned – the thing worked.

Highly recommend Jabra when it comes to Blue Tooth headsets. If they can survive a two week stay in my pants and still come out alive, they can survive anything.

Lost Planet Extreme Condition [*****]

Finding a game like Lost Planet: Extreme Condition in the vast genre of the First Person Shooter is like that moment of indescribable joy when you discover a Playboy in the attic at the ripe age of 13. From the first moments of game play, the scale of Lost Planet is immense, the battles intense, and the environment completely immersive.

The player is in the middle of the battle for a new Earth. What was thought to be a lifeless ball of ice capable of supporting the population, turned out to be inhabited by a race of alien bugs hell bent on killing you and every other human they find. Adding insult to injury, snow pirates – the remnants of the first inhabitants of this bitter world – want you dead just as much as the bugs known as the Akrid.

At any point in the game you get to carry at most two weapons plus a bunch of different hand grenades. The auto aim can be annoying at times as it tends to target the nearest enemy – even if they’re behind a pillar. Besides those few quirks, Lost Planet excels at offering ways to blow shit up and kill things. The player can choose from automatics, shotguns, rocket launchers, sniper rifles, lasers, and energy guns – including the heavy duty versions mountable on mech type robots. To stay alive, you must kill all the enemies and also collect their thermal energy – without it you will literally freeze into a solid brick of ice.

The plot and voice acting is about average as any other first person shooter, but the slack is picked up rapidly by the game play. The controls are intuitive, although the game suffers from an inability to actually view the layout while playing. Also, this game lacks the ability to save progress during game play. The actual location of save points is a mystery to me, as I thought the game saved at data posts, subsequent respawns landed me no where near them. I still prefer the ability to save as I play, Capcom hasn’t learned anything from Dead Rising yet.

Still, I give the game 5 stars, it’s worth a rent, definitely worth a buy. Lost Planet is by far the best FPU for the Xbox 360 I have played yet. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s violent. The trifecta of a successful game.

Laughing at the elites…

With all this Global Warming chatter, we’ve got a NYS town ready to set a new record on snowfall… around 11 feet. I wouldn’t be suprsied if there was some sort of center for GW there, or a press-conference by Al Gore planned.

That said, the Weather Channel the other night was discussing the apparent winter weather headed towards the northeast this week – and the meteorologist spent a good 15 minutes talking about nothing… essentially explaining just how little they know about how the weather may turn in the coming week.

Now mind you, this is the same organization whose top meteorologist suggested revoking scientific certifications of those who disagree with the concept of man-made global warming. They can’t predict the weather 2 days from now… hello?

Minimum Wage – Maximum Lie

Now one of the points I’ve been trying to drill home is that politicians are scumbags. That said, one of their biggest talking points involves the minimum wage. The minimum wage can destroy a business, and cost hard working Americans their jobs.

Sure, for those Americans who choose a job where minimum wage is the only option, an increase sounds great. I don’t know anyone who would argue against a pay raise. Still, there’s a huge difference between a business providing a raise on its own – and being forced to pay it by the Government.

New wage boost puts squeeze on teenage workers across Arizona

Every time the minimum wage is raised, small businesses suffer and the little people lose their jobs. This is the dark side of the talking point. While those who benefit from such a raise might just vote for the dirtbag who promoted the increase, the unemployed are forced to find another job as the businesses they used to work for fight government mandated bankruptcy.

Any time a politician proposes an increase, anything they say in regard to big business, special interest, or helping the poor – is nothing more than another talking point. Any time that discussion involves illegal immigration, you can ignore that too, as I’m sure one of the key reasons that a small business will utilize illegal immigrants is due to the lack of enforcement of immigration and labor laws which would allow them to employ people for less than the minimum wage. Why hire Americans when the abundant supply of illegal immigrants can get more work done for less cash?

Personally, and this is my biased opinion – they should eliminate the minimum wage, or lower it to a point where businesses are forced by the free market to compete for workers. This would drive wages up, force businesses to reassess their operations and increase their efficiency or fail.

Sure it sounds like a great idea, increasing the minimum wage, but the reality is that nothing good ever came from the government meddling in the economy.

Gamefly.com [*****]

So I’ve gone on to my 2nd month of a membership with Gamefly.com. Still, nothing but good things to say about them. Since I’ve joined, I have rented 6 games and kept 1. In total, I’ve spent about $75 over the course of 2 months to play 6 games. In the past, I’d have spent about $300 on the games, instead I spent $75. Also, the game I did buy cost 25% less than it would at any local store including EBGames or Gamestop. Sure it’s used, but the disk was in perfect condition and the case / manual were brand new.

For anyone who is an avid gamer, it makes no sense to keep wasting hard earned money on games that will take less than a week or two to beat. I rarely re-play games I have beaten unless there’s a good multiplayer option, and I don’t have to feel bad about wasting money on a game that frankly… sucks.

I’ll be sending back 2 more games this week, and getting 2 more to play. I’m hoping I’ll get to take a swing at Gears of War this time around, but even if not, I’ve got 15 other games in my queue I could possibly get. They’ve got a free trial – give it a shot.
