When Marketing goes too far…

I’m about ready to trade my Motorola RAZR in for something, anything, other than a Motorola RAZR.

Why?

I’m watching the classic “Trading Places” when a commercial break comes on and it’s none other than Kanye “Bush Hates Black People” West, rapping acronyms like a pro, wearing red in front of a red backround. At the end of the rap, he holds up a red Motorola RAZR and tells me that if I buy that red Motorola RAZR, it will help support the fight against AIDS in Africa.

Whole ad just left a bad taste in my mouth… Spend what, $200 on a cellphone, and how much is going to actually go to help a losing cause? Of course, the RAZR is a full multimedia phone, so whoever the provider is will rake in the dollars from usage, game and song purchases, you name it.

There we have it, an fair amount of money spent to hire a rapper, advertise a specific phone so that an obscene amount of money can be made by Motorola and the companies that sell the phones… with a mere pittance delegated for the fight against AIDS in Africa.

I’m sure if I buy a crate of Trojan condoms and ship it out that way, it will have a greater effect than the purchase of any cellphone will.

Sucessfully defeating the 6 month rule…

The local news rag has a stated 6 month hiatus between printing letters from the same person..

That is, my friends, unless you just say what needs to be said and destroy the opposition with logic and common sense.

A day that will live in infamy to those who still care…

Today, December 7th, 2006 – a day forgotten by history. Back in 1941, 3000 Americans were brutally murdered by a surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Until 9/11, it was the single greatest loss of life due to an enemy attack on the United States of America.

Since an obscene number of Americans have seemingly forgotten about 9/11, the fact that there is little to no mention of the attack on Pearl Harbor today doesn’t amaze me.

MSNBC has it buried at the bottom of the News listings.
Washington Post focuses on the environmental effect of the Arizona’s fuel oil.
CNN has it buried.
FoxNews has it listed a few lines below a story about Wii remotes.

Quite amazingly…
The New York Times has an ENTIRE SECTION DEDICATED.

Not a single major news outlet, even the so-called ‘Fair and Balanced’ ones has any big mention of the anniversary on the main page. A few more years go by and there won’t be anyone left alive to explain what happened (because they were THERE).

None of this surprises me my friends, the last thing the major news media and dirt bag politicians want you to think of is America’s long standing reputation of winning wars and defeating enemies. They want you to think of Iraq as Vietnam and not 9/11 as another Pearl Harbor. Sure, Pearl Harbor was a military target; that was back when we were fighting an honorable enemy… one that didn’t hide in Churches and Schools, using the innocent as human shields before an attack and as shameless propaganda afterwards.

Not even one of my favorite radio personalities, Rush Limbaugh has a single mention of the attack on his front page.

December 7th, 1941 should be fresh on the minds of every living free American, as it was a turning point and quite possibly the last time we won a war before Politicians figured out we didn’t need to win to survive through the next election.

Right now we’ve got a battle going on – in Washington – to prove that we can survive until the next election without a victory in Iraq. I’m 27, I plan on getting married and birthing little Conservatives down the line. I want victory in Iraq, I want terrorists TERRIFIED of attacking our sovereign nation, and I want politicians in office who will be haunted beyond the corrective powers of medication to their grave for sending our brave men and women off to die for nothing.

Not that they are dying for nothing yet, but if these sissy Democrats and Republicans don’t get out of the way and let the job get done and done right, they will have. The blood of heroes is on their hands and it is only getting thicker with every day of propaganda against and doubt in the brave men and women of our armed forces.

God Bless the men and women of our armed forces.

Damnit, Joss…

So I was a late fan to Buffy the Vampire Slayer… I only got into the series about 4 seasons in… Like most Joss Whedon shows, for some reason I didn’t really think I would be interested at the time. As I got hooked, like with most Joss Whedon shows, once the series was up I was pretty disappointed.

I didn’t watch Firefly both because it jumped around the schedule so much and also because I didn’t really think it would be interesting. Now I’ve got Serenity and the entire Firefly series in a cherished place on my movie shelf.

Now all along this show Angel, a spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer had been airing. Never really had any interest in it. Then after I realized Universal HD was simply replaying the same 12 episodes or so of Knight Rider every morning, I switched over to TNT and started watching Angel. Again, I’m hooked on a series that is over.

So I’m sure it’ll be worth a gaggle of laughs when I ask my darling to Netflix the series for me so I can catch up from the beginning… seems to be a habit for me!

Letter To The Editor

A quick background… in my hometown, there has been a traditional “Breakfast With Santa” sponsored by the local PTA and held at a local elementary school. An anonymous individual raised a stink about Santa being there, and as a result Santa was removed from the event and it was renamed to a Winter Wonderland Breakfast. What ensued was the usual BS with everyone jumping on soapboxes and missing the point of the whole thing. I’ve chimed in with a new letter to the editor of the Warwick Advertiser… Maybe they’ll print it?

The other night I saw an advertisement for a big name jewelry store where Santa bought something extra special for his wife. I could only imagine the outcry if they had used the image of Christ or Mohammed to advertise jewelry.

Santa Claus is not a religious icon. While this season coincides with the Holy days of various world religions, you will not see a Crucifix or Star of David hanging from the rearview of Santa’s sleigh.

Basing an argument for banning Santa on religious grounds is absurd. Referencing the non-existent separation of church and state is ignorant. Shouldn’t arguments which reference educational institutions be made in an educated manner?

Imposing views on others by force is wrong. Children should be taught to be tolerant of different viewpoints, to celebrate our differences. Today we’ve taught them to bully, that disagreement is better resolved by threat than understanding. Good job!

Here’s another letter drafted by a partner in crime, another vile and disgusting individual who ~gasp~ doesn’t have any problem with Santa Claus.

I have been reading this brouhaha over the Santa Breakfast with some amusement. I say amusement because I’m boggled by something.

Can someone please explain to me which religion includes “Santa” in its pantheon?

It’s certainly not Christianity (who it should be pointed out explicitly would forbid such a character under that whole forbidding of images, other gods, etc.) Judaism doesn’t recognize Santa. Santa isn’t mentioned in the Bible, the Torah, or the Koran. In fact, for someone who is being kicked to the curb as a religious figure, he gets pretty short shrift and not a lot of recognition as the deity that he is being made out to be.

“Santa”, ladies and gentlemen, is a fictitious character. Any logic you want to use for removing “Santa” from school premises applies equally to removing “Tom Sawyer” or “Clifford the Big Red Dog”. He’s a fictional character whom children enjoy.

If you want to ban Santa, come up with a better excuse than the “church and state argument”, because Santa simply doesn’t apply there. — Derek’s Rantings and Musings.

One less excuse to ignore tailgaters…

As I always say, what can be done by Government can always be done better – and with less consequence – in the private sector. For years the Politicians have told us that cell-phones are the biggest threat on our highways and byways. For years I’ve told you that idiots who are easily distracted are the biggest threat, proven by the number of accidents caused when people (like me) change their radio station and bag a telephone pole.

Tailgaters, reckless drivers, speeders, folks who can’t stay in their lane, these are the true dangers on the highway. Thanks to the folks at Laser Technology, Inc Police have a method of precisely measuring the distance between two cars at speed. For years, LT has provided Police with the laser speed guns which are guaranteed to up your blood pressure and insurance rates. While the cost has been prohibitive for smaller departments, bigger ones like the Arizona Highway Patrol have begun using the technology to nab tailgaters… and God Bless them for it.

Smaller departments either don’t need or cannot afford the LIDAR technology, just the same I’d love to see a tailgater nabbed. With a standard being 1 car length of distance for every 10mph of speed, it’s easy to tell when someone is doing 55mph and being tailgated. I’m sure everyone has driven past a Police car at one point or another while being tailgated – the tailgater will back off for a moment or two, but once the 5-0 is out of sight they go right back to tailgating.

Hopefully when the politicians see how effective this technology is, they’ll stop chasing scapegoats and get back to law enforcement. I see more reckless idiots than cell-phone users – and there will be a day when nobody uses a cell-phone in the standard way while driving. What do we do then, find another scapegoat or give Police the technology to do their jobs better and keep us safe?

We’re fucked.

So I flip on TV this moring, they’re showing the new bastardized version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you know, the politically correct version where Michelangelo isn’t a surfer dude? Anyhow, this commercial comes on for an actual NON ELECTRONIC GAME. That’s right, a NON ELECTRONIC GAME. It’s a mini ski-ball type gimmick from Tiger where you bounce a steel ball (you heard me right, ACTUAL STEEL) off a little trampoline into a traditional ski-ball backing. So while I’m already caught off guard by this ad, I see a typical disclaimer message on the bottom.

I read it and can’t help but laugh…

“Score depends on skill of player.”

Well no shit. We’re fucked.

Cocaine RULES

It seems that every day a new energy drink comes along, pushed by atheletes, actors, you name it.

I’ll be the first to say it, I think Cocaine – if it takes off and gains wider acceptance – can supplant Red Bull as the king of the energy drinks. Ever since I saw the politicians jump upon their soap boxes when Cocaine hit the market, I wanted to try it. As usual, my buddy Mermaid found a local source and the rest is history.

I downed a can this morning at 8am, and it kept me running until the early afternoon. It’s got this almost glowing pink color, a medium level of carbonation (not as strong as Coke, not as weak as Red Bull) and an ingredient which I have yet to identify – that simply put, burns. Not quite a capcaisin pepper burn, but a burn nontheless.

Red can, energy drink section, try it out. 4 times stronger than Red Bull. Fuck wings, gimme a Jet Pack!
