Wisdom from the peanut gallery…

I don’t re-post much of what I get in the email, but every once and awhile I see something that makes me chuckle or makes some sense so I’ll share it with you fine folks. What follows is apparently attributed to Robin Williams, which is false… Only the Statue of Liberty quote at the end is his. It’s still a good read.

Ow.

Surgery took about a half hour this morning. Biggest holdup was due to the weather, the surgeon was late and so was a fair amount of the hospital staff. I’ve got about a week before the stitches come out, then I’m pretty much back to normal and can (hopefully) go back to my gym.

Icky details continue in the Extended Entry. Click if you dare.

Excellent critique on the music industry at large.

I snagged this article via Geek.com, it’s yet another view on why the music industry is going down in flames, very well written and logically put. Apparently the only way to see this is via reposts and the author’s mailing list. I’ve now subscribed to it, and after you read it, you should subscribe too.

Smoooooooke on the waaaaaater….

Anyone who works in the computer industry knows that after awhile the job can get a little droll to say the least. How many times can you hear the same problem without spontaneously chucking memory cards like shurikens in Kung-Fu flick? That’s especially dangerous for me as I can pretty much hit anything dead-on like Bullseye from the ill-fated Dare Devil film…but I digress.

Every once and awhile I’ll get a good challenge, and this week was one of those times.

Oh all the things I never had a chance to say…

A little prefix on this. I caught this email circulating on Myspace, aparently this girl “Elizabeth” cheated on her boyfriend, “Brad,” they had it out, and she subsequently wrote an apology email to him.

Now her email isn’t the gem, his response, which he initially forwarded to 100 people is now circulating our great nation faster than Liberal spin on a murdering gang-banger named Tookie. Click the extended entry for both letters.

Ok, writing most of this week off.

I’m glad to see this week go, and I’m looking forward to most of next week flying by. So Tuesday I discovered a lump in the skin of my back, turns out its some sort of cyst that they’re going to remove next Friday. Started out about the size of a small zit a month back, now its about the size of a quarter… Didn’t want to play around, and it annoys the hell out of me anyhow. A friend recommended sticking it with something and letting all the fun out. I think I’ll leave it to the surgeons. 🙂

So I’ve been driving for the past 10 years now, and never tried snow tires. After getting my ass stuck on Breakneck Rd in Vernon, NJ last Sunday morning due to snow I decided to give them a try. I ended up going with a 15″ wheel and tire package from Tire-Rack, a set of steel rims and Bridgestone Blizzaks. This morning I had my first real trial by fire with them, and I was beyond impressed. I made it to work on time before everyone, the only things slowing me down were common sense and morons in SUV’s. Ya know folks, I’m sorry, but if you can’t do at least 30mph in any condition, you should not be driving. Towards the end of my morning commute we ended up stuck behind some moron in a minivan who likely wasn’t ready for the weather conditions and proceeded to slow everyone down. Now don’t get me wrong, if my car can’t do more than 10mph without getting loose, I won’t do over 10mph. But in a situation where its snowing, if all you can do is 10mph, there are going to be a bunch of people at the first hill ready to slay you for taking their momentum. If you can’t handle driving in bad weather, stay home or get a ride from someone who can handle it.

Not sure what the plan is this weekend, can’t do much with this thing on my back, I’ve just been tired as Hell lately and would just like to get back to the gym. Excessive drinking sounds good!

The sad state of what justifies media attention…

So yesterday I made a point that none of the major news outlets said much of anything in regards to the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. None of the major websites had anything, no Google logo, nothing.

So today is the 25th anniversary of John Lennon getting killed. Every single news outlet has a mention about it. It’s inescapable.

Now I don’t know about you fine people, but I’ll be having a drink to Mark David Chapman tonight.

Fucking Beatles.

In case you all forgot…

In case you missed the widespread news coverage…

Today is the 64th anniversary of a date that should have lived in infamy, but now is as forgotten by the mainstream media and an obscene number of Americans as the morning of September 11th, 2001.

On December 7th, 1941 we were attacked by the Japanese at our naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. 2400 Americans died in the suprise attack which pulled us into World War 2. Even now, 64 years later, we have a military presence in Japan.

I had a hard time noticing any real coverage of the anniversary besides a few heroes sitting down to breakfast at a VFW hall on TV. None of the major newspapers or Internet news sites have any coverage whatsoever. Hell, even Google has no special logo…a true sign that it doesn’t matter anymore.

Perhaps if we were annually reminded of how our greatest generation handled the attack and senseless slaughter of innocent Americans, it wouldn’t be as easy for spineless politicians to defile, degrade, and defame the next greatest generation who is actively defending freedom in Iraq.

I understand that some people think we don’t belong there, and they’re wrong. Thankfully those in power understand the threat, remember 12/7/1941 as well as 9/11/2001, and will do what is necessary to ensure that our lives and freedom endure.

Why it PAYS to be straight from the beginning.

So for the past year or so I’ve been looking for a new television to replace my existing set. The one I have works fine, but it’s not HD. I’ve been waiting for the prices to come down, and finally settled on a model. So I started looking around for it. Only place that had it in stock was Circuit City. You couldn’t pay me to shop there. The customer service is atrocious and the return policy could shoot the tasty Italian sub in my stomach across the room. Anywhere else was an on-line store with shipping in excess of $100. So I took a suggestion from a friend and visited a local electronics retailer. Their selling point is that they can’t afford to advertise like the big guys, but they can meet the prices. They matched the price on a TV which Circuit City offered. I took his pitch, a list of his prices, and went off to see if I could find it cheaper elsewhere.

It’s the Internet, stupid!

So I end up finding the same television for $100 less at J&R Music and Computer World as well as B&H Photo, two big retailers in NYC. One doesn’t have it in stock at their store, the other does. So I call back the local retailer and run it past him. His demur immediately changes, making excuses about how the place probably isn’t an authorized dealer (which means the TV could be gray market, but store is HUGE, so I doubt it). The overall attitude I got was one of “Well I’m not matching THAT price.” It seriously turned me off. He suggested checking with Sony to see if they’re an authorized retailer. So I did. They were.

So now after that experience, I really didn’t feel like going back to the local place. Sure, he just may have matched the price now, and right now I could be kicking back watching HDTV… but the contrast in his attitude towards me between yesterday and today was very telling.

What might have gotten the sale? “Hmm, that’s a pretty low price, do you know if it’s an authorized Sony dealer?” He should have then checked. But he didn’t. He let me walk out of his store once, and he let me off the phone.

Then he lost a sale to Best Buy because of what? His attitude. I ended up paying $15 more than a matched price would have cost… a small price to pay for piece of mind.

Another Letter Makes It To Print…

After ignoring my last letter to the Editor, the Warwick Advertiser today printed my latest in this week’s issue…

Escaping the heat

Not sure why they called it “Escaping the heat,” and there are some grammatical errors in it which I’m pretty sure I didn’t make, but then again they haven’t had a good proofreader since my old man quit.

Here’s a link to the original…
