Android VS iOS… Round 1

Recently I decided to pick up a new Android tablet as I’d been using it on my phone for some time, and while I absolutely adore my iPad 2, I wanted to see how far Android had come as far as providing a real challenge to the market domination held by Apple.

My choice was the ASUS Transformer TF300T.  It’s a 10.1″ tablet with the NVidia Tegra 4 processor, 1gb of RAM, 32gb of built-in storage, and an available microSD card slot.  It’s a few ticks lighter than my iPad2 with a higher resolution as well.  I looked over the other options but I felt that short of going online and ordering a Nexus, this was my best option as far as a balance of performance and price.  The option of an attachable dock -w- keyboard was also nice but wasn’t something I picked up at the time.

Now some folks might say it’d be better to compare this against an iPad3, but to be perfectly honest if you’ve got an iPad3 – how likely are you to switch?  Sure, the cost savings are obvious, but if you’re already in the tablet game the big question for you would be whether to stay with Apple or to try something new.

Now lets get my complaints out of the way right off the get go here…

* Power jack is on the long-edge of the tablet.  One thing I didn’t realize was great about my iPad until I got the TF300T was the location of the power jack.  Generally I use my tablet in a seated position or while laying down in bed.  That leaves the jack pressing into my chest, stomach, or against the table which puts undue stress on the joint between the plug and the cable.  I foresee this wearing out sooner rather than later, which leads me to my next complaint…

* Power cable is unreasonably short.  I’d guess it is 3-4′ in length, so if you enjoy using it while plugged in to maintain the battery, plan on buying a longer cable or only sitting intimately close to the nearest outlet.  Good news is that a 3M charging cable is less than $3, but this leads me to my next complaint…

* Cannot charge / use the tablet when connected to a PC via the USB cable.  I generally kept my iPad jacked in to my PC unless I had the power adapter available.  After installing a 3rd party app from Asus I was able to both maintain the charge as well as use the device.  It seems that the TF300T is specifically designed that when connected to anything BUT the available charger, it will only charge when the screen is off.  LAME.

* Apps?  The only way to really get the full experience of any modern tablet is by downloading and installing apps to the device.  Personally, my priority is on gaming but I also require other apps to allow me to do my job remotely.  I’ve never paid much attention to the Google Play store until now, and when compared to the Apple App store – there is very little to actually compare.  The whole Play store interface is generally cumbersome.  Searching for various keywords results in a long list of Apps with a small number that actually provide what the user is looking for.  Other app stores (such as Amazon) are available but as they’re based on providing app’s to the same Android system, you may get more flexibility but IMHO – much less convenience.  It should be able to provide greater granularity to the store without being sued by Apple for copyright infringement.

* Games.  Like I said, I’m an avid gamer.  You don’t have a gaming laptop, Xbox 360, Wii, and iPad 2 each with an obscene catalog of games if your hobby is fly fishing.  I love to game.  I love to explore, conquer, and generally bake the workday out of my brain in new games.  There’s a pretty large collection available, and the HD titles look prettier overall than their sister titles on iOS, but I’ve discovered that there’s just way too much … CRAP in the Android app store.  There’s no real distinction between what plays best on a tablet vs a phone beyond “HD” or “THD” branded titles, so the global availability of Android across many different hardware platforms has drastically cut the price point of owning an Android based tablet but it has also contributed to the general confusion of making the most of the tablet with new apps.  As far as my current addiction – sandbox titles – there are a handful, but none of the 2D staples that I’ve enjoyed on my iPad.

Now for the pros.

* Performance.  This thing is FAST.  Loading the same App on the TF300T vs my iPad 2 indicates that the TF300T spanks it, hands down, as far as loading Apps and booting the device.

* Options.  The TF300T has a GPS, a standard mini-HDMI port, expandable storage, and ‘rooting’ the device allows the user to install any number of custom ROM’s, apparently some folks even install Ubuntu linux on these.  I’ve already rooted it so I can fully explore what it is capable of, I even tried a custom (and popular) ROM known as “Cyanogenmod.”  I ended up removing it shortly after as I found that the performance rapidly degraded with that ROM.  I may try some others but for now the stock ROM, rooted, appears to work just fine for me.

* Price.  With tax, the TF300T cost me $374 at Best Buy.  My iPad2 64GB Wifi cost about $800 new, and an iPad3 with 32gb of storage will run you about $600 and generally lock you in to the “Apple” universe while the TF300T offers many more options for expansion and utilization.

Overall, Android is the best option for a new tablet user IF you’ve never owned an iPad.  When it comes to apps, Apple wins hands down.  Jailbreak the device, and Apple still holds the lead.  If I could make a simple metaphor here, Android is like the wild west of portable computing where iOS is the shining city on a hill.  Not without its flaws mind you, and unless Apple retires its legal department and dusts off its innovation department, I don’t see a future where Android will not dominate… but it’s not there yet.

Here’s hoping that Google gets off its ass and tightens up that app store so there will be a day where I don’t need to switch between my iPad and my Transformer anymore, until then – I’ve got the best of both worlds.

Delving into the 2nd dimension of sandbox gameplay…

For years now I’ve had a healthy addiction to Minecraft, even going as far as developing my own mods for the game.  Still, night after night, collecting resources, building, fighting, etc… in the nearly infinite sandbox world eventually grew repetitive and tiresome.  That put me on the search for something new to whet my sandbox style appetites, and with that in mind I’m hoping to build a fairly complete list of what I’ve played so far as well as a brief review of what I think is worth playing.

Terraria: terraria2As of last week, my primary addiction was Terraria.  I picked it up for my PC via Steam for $2.50.  It has all of the boxes checked as far as feeding my addition… mining, crafting, fighting, etc… The worlds range from small to massive with a massive inventory of items to create and quite possibly the best lighting I’ve ever seen in a sandbox style game.  One of the best aspects of this game are the number of bosses and enemies, and that defeating bosses such as the ominous sounding “Wall of Flesh” will reshape your entire world and provide a whole new set of challenges to face.

Junk Jack:

junkjack

This game is in the same vein as Terraria, but only available on iOS for $2.99 I believe.  It has some IAP options, but nothing necessary to actually play and enjoy the game.  It also provides large open worlds with copious amounts of crafting and exploration options.  Enemies are fairly diverse and provide even more resources for crafting.  The worlds aren’t as large as what you’d find on Terraria, but there are many different biomes available which always keep things interesting.

Blockheads:

blockheads

My first experience with 2D sandbox games, also only available on iOS, it follows a traditional ‘pay to play’ model.  Crafting options are much more limited than either Terraria or Junk Jack and my biggest gripe with the game is the general requirement of IAP (In App Purchases) in order to progress through the game and accomplish anything before the next generation iPad arrives.  The graphics are done very well and I also enjoy the ability to queue several actions, but there aren’t any threats in the game besides the environment (ie, gravity and lava if you go deep enough).  It has potential, but this one is strictly about mining, crafting, and if you want to do anything really cool – paying.

Deepworld:

deepworld-embed-02

This was a game that sucked me in quick, sucked some cash out of my pocket (the basic worlds are free, but if you want premium access as well as better tools and resources, be prepared to perform some IAP’s).  Constructed in a “steampunk” open world, there are a handful of enemies and while it offers a fairly large amount of resources to craft with – what you can craft in the end is also pretty limited.  Every world starts out polluted, and in order to purify it and create life the player must defeat dungeons teaming with insanely overpowered boss characters.  Most worlds are generally harvested by their player base and stripped clean with very little consideration for actually purifying the worlds.  I dropped $10 on my own private world to collect resources from, as well as another $30 in IAP points to upgrade my available tools.  It’s not something I do on a regular basis (I blame the tax refund).  It’s fairly fun to play and offers PVP, but overall needs a lot more content.

Epic Inventor:

epic-inventor4

I’ve only played about an hour into this game so far.  The control and crafting setup is pretty cumbersome.  You start out with an open world and a robot sidekick that can both defend you as well as provide some advanced transportation options.  Resources are gathered by holding down a keyboard key and the duration of collecting the resource is determined by the level of the tool you use.  Graphics are much simpler than Terraria, and so far I do not see any real options as far as being able to “dig” your own world.  The biggest problem that I had was the crafting interface as there are MANY crafting options and even with the ability to filter down a specific type of item to craft, you’re limited by a single line side-scrolling selection of what to craft.  I need to spend some more time in game to see if it’s worth even a temporary addiction, but so far it hasn’t really hooked me.

Clonk:

29992_t

Honestly I logged in to this game for about 5 minutes then logged right back out.  I’m going to give it another shot but the graphics were seemed dated and I didn’t quite grasp the controls right away.  There are both free and paid versions of the game.

That’s pretty much my top list as far as your “traditional” 2D sandbox style games that I’ve played through so far.  Up next? 2d drilling and resource collection titles. 🙂

It’s not hard to keep a kid from buying something on your phone or tablet…

How To Avoid Handing Your Tot A Blank Check Made Out To Apple

I keep catching stories about how unwitting parents hand over one of their (fill in the blank) electronic devices which are capable of making In App Purchases (for the uninitiated, many games on Apple / Android / Windows based devices allow you to make real purchases in game of various tools, supplies, etc…) only to discover that the child has racked up thousands of dollars of purchases in a very short time.

This is completely avoidable.  There are a few ways to avoid it.

* Don’t let your child use the device.

* Don’t associate a credit-card with the account on the device.

* Log out of your account prior to handing it over.

* Disable the internet access on the device.

Personally, I think Apple should take the initiative with this by adding a few new options to the App store…

* An option to disable IAP.

* An option to prompt for the account password with *every purchase* instead of caching it for a short period of time.

It can’t be that hard.  I realize that innovation doesn’t come easy to Apple these days, but if they put as much effort into raising the bar as they do in suing their competition – they wouldn’t have to worry about competition.

The customer is almost always an idiot.

eBay’s VIN System Error Costs Me $1,000, They Don’t Particularly Care

So apparently Ebay Motors has a feature that lets you punch in the VIN of a vehicle you are selling, and it looks up the information in order to populate your auction.  Pretty cool feature, right?

Well this guy California decided to buy a Prius via Ebay.  He bought the car, and shortly thereafter realized that while the car was advertised as a Prius III, he actually got a Prius II.  The big differences beyond some trim differences?  A “solar roof” and a “nav system.”  Once he realized that what he bought wasn’t actually what he wanted, he tried to get the seller to resolve the $1000 price difference on the sticker between the Prius II and Prius III.

What has me scratching my head here is… you bought a car on Ebay, but didn’t realize that the car you bought lacked a nav system or solar roof?

I’d like to think that most people who decide to buy a car sight unseen via Ebay would actually do their research and make sure that the car they are planning to buy has all of the options and features that they are looking for – this yutz obviously skipped a few steps.

Most auctions have pictures.  Most auctions have a full list of the features on the car.  If it doesn’t have the feature you want, or the color you want, or the trim you want… DON’T BUY IT.  If anything this guy probably impulse bought the car and then afterwards realized “Hey!  For $1000 more I could have had a nav system and a solar roof?!  Let me whine to the seller and Ebay about it!!!”

The customer isn’t always right, many of them are idiots, and I don’t see why Ebay or the seller should care unless it was advertised as having specific features that it didn’t actually have.  This looks more like buyers remorse or an attempt to abuse the system to extort money from a seller.

My advice?  Don’t buy a car online without seeing it and making sure it has everything you are looking for, or that you can afford to add those features after the fact.  If you do – enjoy driving a car that does more damage to the environment in the process of creating its battery pack than you could ever offset by driving it. 🙂

Bailouts are for losers.

Community Raises $80,000 In Attempt To Save Local Toy Store

While on the surface this appears to be a heartwarming story of locals rallying to support a failing business, there is an underlying problem here which despite the effort to help them pay off a bank loan which was not being extended/renewed – will likely doom the business to fail anyhow.

There are a ton of different opinions on the topic of big business vs small business.  I know far too many people who complain that when a big business like Wal-Mart comes to town, the smaller businesses get driven out.  I can’t argue this – it’s true… but nobody stops to ask “why did the small business fail?”

Simply put – they didn’t compete.

Within 45 minutes of my  home there are 3 Wal-Mart and innumerable other big box stores which sell the same exact or similar products to what I can find at local businesses.  In some – not all – cases, the big stores offer lower prices.  Still, most days if I need something and know I can get it 5 or 10 minutes from my home, I will forsake a few extra dollars or cents and buy local.

Why?

* I use less gas when I buy local.

* The local business knows me.

* The local business offers a selection of products to satisfy my requirements.

* The customer service is generally superior.

* The prices may be higher in certain instances – but the marginally higher cost is worth the convenience and service.

This toy store owed nearly $76k on a bank loan, the bank wanted its money and refused to extend the loan.  The toy store didn’t make enough money to pay back its loan because it didn’t attract enough customers in order to satisfy its financial requirements.  Once the publicity from this passes, unless they come up with new initiatives and ideas in order to stay viable despite the presence of big box and Internet stores – the same management and the same policies will put them right out of business.

They need to expand their market, lower their operating costs, and streamline their business model in order to keep going.  I don’t always shop local – case in point when I needed a snow blower this past winter, the local hardware store had an electric for over $350 while a Lowes another 10 minutes down the road had a more powerful similar model for under $300.  It’s a fine line between paying more for convenience and service or less, especially in this economy… When businesses can’t compete, they can and should fail.  Kudos to the customer base and business community that helped clear up the current financial issues, but without significant change in the business itself – all they’ve done is buy them a few more months before the “going out of business” sale starts.

Is there a level of obvious beyond “glaringly?”  With the so called ‘fiscal cliff’ averted, it appears that the end result was nothing more than tax increases with no real cuts in spending.  The decision makers, the people who voted for it, and the people who sat around with their thumbs up their collective asses for the past 12 years as two administrations absolutely jacked our rate of spending – need to go.

That being said, short of a zombie plague taking them out sooner – we’ll have to wait until 2014 to start removing them from office.

In the mean time, I had a thought – give Obama what he wants.  Let him spend us into obscurity, the faster the better.  Every single branch of our government has completely failed in regard to protecting the rights of the American people and doing anything to check the obscene rate of growth our government has achieved.  The economy can’t keep up.  The American people can’t keep up.  We’ve borrowed so much money that most likely my great grandchildren will still be suffering as a result.

To quote Keanu Reeves from Speed – “Floor it.”  Scrap the debt limit altogether.  Give Obama and Congress a blank check to spend as much as they want on what they need.  Drive up the debt.

The fiscal cliff was nothing more than a ruse to justify tax increases by a bunch of weak willed and ideologically bankrupt politicians who’d rather pass the buck to the next generation than make the changes required so the next generation can be solvent.  Forget the debt, the unfunded liabilities on medicare and social security laugh at our debt as that number sails past $63 TRILLION dollars according to a recent report.

By driving spending up to even greater levels, and sending the national debt even higher – we will take an inefficient machine run by complete and utter morons and blow the engine.  How will federal salaries and entitlements be paid if we can no longer borrow money?  Businesses will flee in droves.  Americans will flee in droves.  The fragile economy will collapse, the government will collapse, and then my friends – anything is possible.

I’m not saying I want the economy to fail, or things to get worse, but its clear that the people in power over the past 12 years are completely incapable of making real positive change capable of restoring the American dream to its former glory.  It’s been almost 25 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, it’s time we hand things over to the same ideology that destroyed the former superpower so they can destroy ours and give us a chance to bring back something that resembles what this country used to be.

Floor it.

To the last gasp of Liberty…

Caught a YouTube video this morning which highlighted a protest in the UK regarding the banning of Fox Hunting, which included commentary from several residents regarding the crime rate in the UK since handguns were banned nationwide in 1997.  The overall feel of the video indicated a sharp rise in the level of crime which included commentary from an anonymous “Bobby” to reinforce the opinion.

I felt compelled to dig in to this a bit…

In 1997, the UK Parliament enacted 2 firearms amendments.  The first banned any handgun with a caliber greater than .22 (5.6mm).  The second banned the private possession of all handguns regardless of caliber.  You could still own antique or historic guns as long as the ammunition was no longer available, or if the ammunition WAS available – they had to be securely stored at a government owned and operated site.  You could still have a musket though, hoorah.

The amendments were passed in response to the Dunblane Massacre, where a 43 year old man walked in to the school with 4 handguns and murdered 16 children and one adult before turning the gun on himself.  Sound familiar?  The new laws went into full effect on Feburary 1st, 1998; two years after the Dunblane Massacre.

The Brits have a site set up, homeoffice.gov.uk, where overall statistics can be obtained.  In 1998, they changed the method of counting which “had the effect of increasing the number of crimes counted” and also made it so that the numbers of crimes committed “before and after [1998] are not directly comparable.

So the UK bans handguns, and then tweaks the numbers so that you can’t accurately compare the crime rate before and after the ban.  By looking at the raw data, it appears that under the “New Rules” specific crimes were re-categorized…

The primary category of “violent crime” had several changes made:

  • Under “violence against the person”:
    • “Other wounding, etc.” became “Less serious wounding.”
    • “Possession of weapons” was added.
    • “Harassment” was added.
    • “Racially or religiously aggravated less serious wounding” AKA hate crime was added.
    • “Racially or religiously aggravated harassment” AKA hate crime was added.
    • “Cruelty to and neglect of children” was added.
    • “Assault on a constable” was added.
    • “Common assault (includes some minor injury)” was added.
    • “Racially or religiously aggravated common assault” was added.
    • Under “sexual offenses”:
      • “Soliciting or importuning by a man” was added.
      • “Abuse of position of trust” was added.
      • “Other miscellaneous sexual offences”
      • In regard to “robbery”:
        • “Robbery of business property” was added.
        • “Robbery of personal property” was added.

Violent crime covers a wealth of offenses in the UK.  Under the old rules, the number of violent crimes committed in the UK for 1998 was 331,717.  Under the new rules, we see 615,995.  The biggest percentage increase that accounts for the jump are those crimes classified as “violence against the person” followed closely by “robbery” and lastly our personal favorite – “sexual offenses.”

Using the violent crime rate in 1998 under the “new numbers” as a baseline, we see the rate increase steadily.

  • 1998 – 502,788
  • 1999 – 581,034 (+13.5%)
  • 2000 – 600,922 (+16.4%)
  • 2001 – 650,330 (+22.7%)

The number of sex offenses?

  • 1998 – 46,372
  • 1999 – 47,185 (+1.4%)
  • 2000 – 45,878 (-1.1%)
  • 2001 – 49,581 (+6.5%)

How about robbery?

  • 1998 – 66,835
  • 1999 – 84,277 (+20.6%)
  • 2000 – 95,154 (+29.7%)
  • 2001 – 121,359 (+44.9%)

Overall violent crime?

  • 1998 – 615,995
  • 1999 – 712,496 (+13.5%)
  • 2000 – 741,954 (+16.9%)
  • 2001 – 821,270 (+24.9%)

The numbers here do not lie, and they tell the story of what will happen here in the US if all of the people begging for greater gun control get their way.  It should be noted that while over the past 9 years, the total number of violent crimes in the UK has been on the decline, recent numbers (again, using 1998 as a baseline) are still higher now than before the ban was enacted.

Violent crime: 2010 – 871,712 (+36.7%)

Sexual offenses: 2010 – 54,509 (+15%)

Robbery: 2010 – 75,101 (+11.1%)

Overall violent crime: 2010 – 1,001,332 (+38.5%)

The population of the UK in 1998 was 59.2 million.  In 2011 63.1 million.  It has grown approximately 6.2% in size since the ban was passed in 1998, while its violent crime rate has jumped by 38.5%.

I’d say that at least the UK doesn’t have to worry too much about shooting sprees, no more school children being slaughtered by the mentally ill toting assault weapons – that is until 2010 when a cab driver went postal with a double barreled shotgun and bolt action 22 rifle, killing 12 and injuring 11 before doing the world a favor and turning the gun on himself.

The population of the UK supported the ban in the hopes it would prevent another massacre.  Only now, when something as seemingly benign as a traditional fox hunt is threatened do they realize just how much they lost.

What happened in Newtown, Connecticut was a tragedy, but the truth is that violent crime in this country did not start with Newtown, or Columbine, or any of the other mass murders committed with a gun that received such widespread media attention.  Violent crime has existed since the dawn of mankind.  Drafting new laws which attempt to restrict the access to methods of causing violence ala gun control do nothing to decrease the overall levels of violent crime.  New gun control laws which only stand to restrict law abiding citizens from obtaining and using a firearm for legal purposes only affect law abiding citizens.  The criminals can still obtain any weapon they want.

These children weren’t murdered by assault weapons, they were murdered by a mentally ill bastard whose first victim, his mother, made the fatal mistake of owning guns and not properly securing them in the same place said bastard called home.

No ordinary American can legally own a fully automatic weapon.  No ordinary American can legally own a gun which holds more than a specific number of rounds in a clip.  The slippery slope to greater numbers of violent crimes starts with something benign.  Folding stocks, flash suppressors, etc…  don’t seem like a big deal right now.  Label a gun as an assault weapon so that the public will approve it.  Miscategorize a semi-automatic AR-15 as a “military grade assault weapon” so people will gladly ape the lie that “nobody needs a military weapon” when no ordinary law-abiding-citizen actually has a real “military grade assault weapon.”  Call for bans of semi-automatic weapons.  Call for bans of handguns.  Call for bans of rifles and shotguns.  The last call you make will be to the Police in a desperate hope that they will be able to outrun the bullets.

Many people don’t like guns, and I can sympathize.  Whether or not you like guns, you need to understand why we have the right to bear arms.  The primary reason we have guns in this country, and a right to own and use them, is to defend ourselves and our loved ones from any threat be it animal, criminal, or tyrannical.    That most guns are used for hunting or sport is just one of the perks for those who enjoy that right every single day.  The problem isn’t the gun, it is humanity, and until we stop blindly accepting the arguments from those who focus all their efforts on the trigger instead of the finger pulling it – violence will only grow and our freedoms will continue to fade.

The statistics prove it, time and again – when the people are armed and have access to the means to defend themselves, crime is low, and liberty abounds.  When the people are disarmed, crime is high and liberty is at stake.  Look past the emotion of 20 innocent children being murdered, look past the means employed to exact such a tragedy, and realize just who will have control over our lives and safety when we foolishly yield that control so that we can feel like we’ve done something to prevent the next crime from ever taking place.

Innocents die every single day in America, people of every race, color, and creed.  We look around and try to find someone or something to blame for the pain we see but never stop to see that these knee-jerk emotional reactions that our elected officials will gladly embrace in order to empower their own interests do nothing more than lead us as useful idiots, as sheep – to the slaughter of our safety, our security, and most importantly – our liberty.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before…

Shortly after recovering from the mess that was “Superstorm Sandy” last month, I received a call from my housemate that there was a large puddle on the floor around the water heater.  It had been working fine after I replaced the malfunctioning “safety device” a year earlier.  The device consisted of a small vial of oil with a spring-loaded trap.  The way it worked is that if the temperature inside the combustion chamber below the water heater exceeded a certain threshold, the oil would heat up and expand, shattering the glass vial and closing off the air supply to the burner.  In my case, the heater was functioning fine but after so many heat/cool cycles the safety finally gave up.   I ended up getting a used replacement off Ebay, and for the longest time had no trouble.

Fast forward back to the week after Sandy, I get home and discover the big puddle of water on the floor, a blend of rust and other crap which was surrounding the heater.  I go online and try to find a new unit locally, Lowes has a model from the same manufacturer with the same specifications for about $550.  I wasn’t too thrilled about the expense, nor the added cost of buying the various tools and fittings required to complete the job.  Since  I’m not exactly rolling in wealth (despite being one of those despised top 10% of wage earners who voted for Romney) – I couldn’t afford to have a plumber do it so I set it up myself.  After about 2 days without hot water, once again we were able to wash dishes and ourselves.

Fast forward to this past weekend, I recently picked up one of those Shark steam mops which also had a detachable steamer and had been progressing through the various areas of the house to clean.  Part of doing a thorough job was taking everything off the shelves in my utility room, moving the shelves out, and steam cleaning the tile floor.  Well when it came time to empty the shelves by the water heater, I started pulling out the gallon jugs of water I keep on hand in case of emergency and come to realize that one of them was almost completely empty.  The cap was sealed, but under the jug there was a small puncture hole due to someone pushing the jug backwards in order to store something else on the shelf.  The jug must have leaked all over the floor… right next to the water heater.

Wait for it…

An idiot’s guide to “Right to Work”

The origin of the labor union concept was to enable “collective bargaining.”  This allowed a group of employees to negotiate with their employer over wages, benefits, etc…  It kept employers from doing things which would harm the lives or livelihood of its employees by protecting a right to stop working when an agreement between the parties couldn’t be made.

Now to get a job with an employer in a NON “right to work” state, if the employees are unionized, you MUST join the union.  You must join, and you must pay dues.  Here’s the kicker.  These unions collect enough dues, and they build power… Not so much power for the employees, that’s a given – but even greater power for the unions.  The unions can take those dues – and do things like purchase advertising time for a political candidate… or make donations to a political party.

It doesn’t matter what your personal political affiliation is, your money goes to the union, and the union leaders spend it how they see fit on whomever they decide to support – which in modern times generally leans towards the Democratic party.  You may not see that as a problem, but when you factor in union support for the Obama campaign in 2008 – and the so called stimulus funds which were used to secure union jobs across the fruited plain… even the most useful idiot should be able to see the pattern.

The other day in Michigan – you may have missed this if you don’t listen to alternate media or Fox News (or Faux News to so called free thinkers aka useful idiots) – a Fox News reporter made the mistake of asking one of the protestors why they are against “right to work.”  It started with a valid opinion that the people who choose not to join the labor union under the new law would be reaping the benefits obtained by years if not decades of union negotiations.  Then he proceeded to violently attack the reporter.  It was largely ignored or downplayed by the mainstream media… too bad they weren’t carrying Tea Party signs.

I personally agree with the concept of right to work.  Basically, it gives you the option – the freedom – to decide whether or not you want to join the labor union.  Neither the union or the employer can force you to join.  I also understand the criticisms of its opponents, that the rights and benefits enjoyed by an employee were built on the backs of union workers.  All that being said though, when unions become too big and too powerful – to the point that they receive millions upon millions of tax dollars to support its members while the rest of us are forced to suffer?  To use a Liberal phrase… “It’s time to level the playing field.”

The law reinforces freedom of association, it provides hard working Americans with more options, and the fine print is a bulwark to the flood of cash from unions to politicians that elevates their members by stepping on the rest of us.  Imagine if the stimulus money was actually spent to try and spur economic growth instead of simply prop up unions and campaign supporters so they could endure the economic downturn?  The possibilities are endless.

If you want to join the union, you can.  I don’t believe that this could hurt an honest labor union – it however will hurt the unions that wield their power in a way that puts the union’s needs above those of the workers which they represent to the detriment of the long term sustainability of the business as well as the country we call home.
