Drive… ?

When I saw a new series starting on Fox starring Amy Acker and Nathan Fillion, I kept close track of it so I could make sure not to miss the premiere. That said, I like it. Decent story, decent action, it’s got my attention peaked. Now considering that the last time Fillion starred in what turned out to be a cult classic – it was canceled due to shit marketing and a network that didn’t have a clear vision.

I hope like Hell they don’t make the same mistake here, but if I see one more commercial for Doritos or the Chevy Impala in the next 10 minutes I’m about ready to call it quits. Where they get off calling a show Drive, centering it around a race, and then STOPPING it every 10 minutes for the same lame ass commercials is beyond my ability to comprehend.

The premiere continues tomorrow night, the stories are developing and definitely like the direction it is taking. It’s nice to see a network breaking the mold… Maybe it’ll allow them to reclaim some of the ground lost to the cable networks.

That said, if some Fox exec is running a Google and catches this post – CUT THE DAMNED COMMERCIALS. It’s enough to make me change the channel.

Good Grief…

Imus Fired.

How many more people are going to have their lives destroyed by Jackson and Sharpton?

The backlash is already starting up… Anyone wonder when they’re going to apologize to the Duke Lacrosse players?

These guys walk around trumpeting any cause to get their name in the paper – destroying lives all the way. Why do they get a pass? If I said half the things they have I’d end up flat broke from paying off libel settlements.

In the words of Danny Glover, I think the next time these idiots open their traps – they should be told to “Go Spit.”

Bitches aint nothin’ but ho’s and tricks.

Not to say what Imus said is not completely stupid – and he owes the girls an apology…

But I think Reverend Al really needs to hop his fat ass off the soap box before he hurts himself.

Snoop Dog talks about hos more than Imus ever did, is worth more money than Imus ever was, and is sponsored by Chrysler, Orbitz, and Boost Mobil. If the big problem is that someone called a woman a nappy headed ho and not that a crusty old cracker called a black woman a nappy headed ho… Then by all means, if Sharpton has any integrity he’ll go after the rap music industry next.

Shmucks.

Since I finished the book the other night, I figured I would add my own chapter.

Corporate Shmucks.

6 months ago I needed more outlets installed at the hosting facility where I keep my servers. They tell me I need to request a power audit so they can see how much I’m currently using. The numbers come back a month and a half after I asked, I’m fine, I just need to get 2 more power strips. Now instead of having 4 strips – hows about I get 2 total with a higher amperage? Mind you, this is how I have things set up at my other hosting facility (much nicer folks over there). They come back with a price… but they won’t supply the power strips.

That’s fine… Which ones should I purchase then?

Now they do supply the strips – they just can’t tell me when, how, where or why about getting them there.

I ask – since I’m only using half the power (10 out of 20 amps) why can’t we just add more outlets? They suggest splitting the current outlet and adding a 2nd strip. That’s fine, lets do it.

4 months later I’m still asking – how do I get more outlets? I haven’t been able to add a single computer to this cabinet in nearly 6 months because these account reps have the attention span of a mouse in a cheese factory.

So I finally get a response. I can’t add more outlets. I aparrently need to move some of my hardware off to a 2nd cabinet because I’m using too much. Now apparently they have an 80% limit (16 AMPS) and I’m still using 10 AMPS. I’m using too much. Ok, I don’t care, I need outlets – what do I need to do to get more outlets.

Now I’m also exceeding some imaginary 90 watt per square foot limit in our cabinet. I’m only using half the space but I am now using too much amperage – and too much power – for our single cabinet. I need a 2nd cabinet, with power, etc… That I’ll only likely be able to use half of.

Does any of this make sense to you? I’ve got a 2nd hosting facility – same configuration, and no complaints. I’ve wasted 6 months to find out that what they told me initially was wrong, and now I’ve got to invest significant time and money to make up for the fact that what has been working for years is actually set up wrong.

How about I move my stuff to a place where it is set up right and they don’t come up with idiotic excuses, money grabs, and brain-dead support reps to solve the problems when all I need is a Goddamned extension cord.

I won’t say the name of the company that’s giving me heartburn – but if you happen to know the name of a hosting facility with 24 hour access that isn’t owned by a big name telephone company – let me know.

What a crock…

So on a whim I decided to order some vanity plates for the VW – LMAO WTF. Since the site took the order, I didn’t think twice about it. A week later, I got the registration. A month later – still no plates – no notification of a problem – and I couldn’t look up the status on the website.

So I call them up “Oh they won’t let you have those!” That would’ve been nice. What would’ve been nicer is if they’d have refunded my $43 without having to request it over the phone. Hell, a call about 3 weeks ago saying “NO” would have been nice too.

Bah.

Update

Still 250lbs, another 4 miles to the list… (That puts me up to 12 at the gym thus far) Now I’m just debating whether or not I want to continue on with some weightlifting in the afternoon or just do the cardio thing until I drop some of this gut. The last time I dedicated most of my effort to cardio I got myself down to about 200lbs… Wasn’t that long ago either, maybe 5 years? I am older now, and I don’t quite expect miracles – but I know what my body can and can’t do so… I figure if I can at least get rid of my spare tire – that’s worth at least 20-30lbs and then I can take off on my original route of size and intimidation. 🙂

Everybody’s a Christian

When it is a holiday.

Had dinner with the folks today, then remembered I needed some milk for my coffee tomorrow morning… Figured I would hit the local supermarket.

Shop-Rite in Warwick? Closed. Why? Everyone in that store can’t be a Christian.

Ok, so A&P is open 24 hours. Not on easter. Closed at 5pm too. Again, everyone in that store can’t be a Christian.

I did manage to get my milk, at the local Muslim owned gas station.

At least someone still has a work ethic in this country. As far as I’m concerned, if you’re not Christian – you should be working.

Sonic The Hedgehog [*xxxx]

Back in 1990 my parents bought me my first game console. Sure, my brother had his NES but for that Christmas I received a Sega Genesis. 256 colors, 16-bit gaming, real groundbreaking stuff. While I had popped my proverbial cherry with Mario and Luigi, the Sega introduced Sonic The Hedgehog… a heroic blue speed-freak set to free his critter pals, obtain the chaos emeralds, and defeat the evil Dr.Robotnik. Several sequels followed – although I believe that progress peaked with the first sequel (which I could usually clear in about 2 hours flat).

The next level system from Sega – the Dreamcast – introduced a new 3D Sonic. I tried it, I couldn’t stand it. As was the case with most games translated from a side-scroller – it is either well done (ala Duke 3D or the various Mario titles) or completely blown – like the various Sonic releases. Now a few years back – Contra was re-released for the PS2 as a side scrolling game with vastly improved graphics. It received good reviews, and overall was a great addition to the series. It pleased old-school gamers and the youngin’s alike.

At this point, I’m pretty sure you’ve all realized that my opinion of Sonic The Hedgehog for the Xbox 360 is that it is an absolute piece of crap. Don’t get me wrong, I can overlook the fact that Robotnik has lost weight and is called Egghead. The graphics are phenomenal, and all the classic characters are otherwise back in 360 degree HD glory. The opening cinematics are breathtaking. What I can’t handle is very simple actually.

When I want to look left, I aim the stick left. When I want to look right, I aim the stick right. The Left stick will allow you to move Sonic around. The right stick aims the camera – and it is backwards. Aim left, look right. Aim right, look left. Worse part – there’s no way to reverse it. I’ll admit I tried – but what can I say, every game I’ve played for the past 10 years which involved aiming with a stick HAS HAD THE ABILITY TO REVERSE THE AIM.

The shoddy camera control completely distracts from any positive experience to be had with this game. IMHO, Sega needs to stick with what its good at… either bring Sonic back as a side-scrolling adventure or hang up the hat – if I see another 3D Sonic hit the market I’m going to puke. The only thing that could redeem this game would be an update through Xbox live that allowed the player to customize the controls. A little kid might not have a problem with it, but not everyone wants to shoot people – sometimes even I want a game rated E for everyone.

I say, do it right – or quit.

Schmucks! [***–]

I’ve been a fan of Jackie Mason for years – his common sense approach to humor has really set him apart from other comics. Years ago – I think I was a kid at the time – he even had a talk-show were political topics were discussed – picture Real Time with Bill Maher without the blond putz proving that all blond stereotypes are in fact true.

That said, I was looking forward to his new book where he joined forces with Raul Felder to identify the real shmucks in our society. Growing up with parents from the City, I picked up plenty of Yiddish along the way – so words like shmuck, putz, and meshuggah always get my attention and evoke a chuckle.

For about $25 anyone can pick this up at Borders like I did and get a good 200 pages of humorous social commentary. Honestly though, I think the book should have been half the length, cost $12.95, and nix the lawyer. The head of steam this book picks up is rapidly lost the moment Felder drafts a chapter. I can’t recall the specific moment, but I’d say it was bout 1/4 of the way into the book where some executive decision to throttle Jackie Mason’s signature shtick came into play. Now it’s one thing to hear Jackie Mason complain about something – it’s always worth a laugh and based in common sense. I can hear a lawyer comment any day of the week – a burn from Mason is always a treat.

It’s definitely a quick read, I’m nearly done with the book after about 2 days – so my recommendation is find a Library and save the $25. I know I should have.

Now this… this is ironic.

At the gym this morning, I noticed that there is a Good Humor Ice Cream vending machine.

That said… I’ve been reading that the best time to perform cardio exercise is first thing in the morning, as it forces the body to tap the fat reserves, so I decided to give it a go as I’m still hell-bent on eliminating this gut I’ve had since birth.

So today I woke up at the usual time, except instead of lounging on the couch with a cup of Africa Kitamu by Starbucks and watching another episode of Angel that I’ve already seen more than twice – I hopped in the shower, slammed my coffee, brushed, dressed, and was out the door and in the gym by 6:45am. I pulled about 4 miles in 30 minutes, pretty good rate for me considering I’m still getting back onto my feet.

I think I can continue to pull this off… I may get into a daily cardio habit as I can’t see the every other day thing as a benefit if I am trying to develop a good fitness habit. I hope to get at least a 45 minute session in every morning at some point – this is a good start.

So day 1 – 250lbs, 4 miles. Lets see how we do.
